pameliacc asked: Hello, I am new to this forum and I have many questions to ask.
Some history to begin with.
We own a 1960’s single level Ranch style home. Currently we have 1.5 inch oak trim around the doors and some windows and baseboards. In the 80’s they added on a great room with vaulted ceilings that has trimmed windows and wood casements. The remaining windows in the bedrooms, livingroom, bathrooms, and kitchen are not trimmed nor do they have wood casments. We also have hollow wood doors throughout.
We have removed the popcorn ceiling in our bedroom and we are ready to paint. We have also removed the gold carpet (which is also throughout the rest of the house) and we are installing wood laminate flooring. I really want white crown moulding and trim around the windows, doors, and baseboards. I am not sure that this would look okay in one room only. I would also like to possibly add some crown moulding in other locations. Is there a rule regarding this issue?
In response to “K”, I am sorry, maybe I wasn’t being specific enough, and I do have that problem at times. I am asking if it is generally okay to put white crown molding and white trim up in one or so rooms if the rest of the house has oak trim. Is it a general rule to continue the same molding and trim style throughout the house?
I did leave out that we are replacing our old aluminum windows with white vinyl, so this will help to add some white throughout the house.
These are big decisions for us. Partly, because I am meeting a lot of resistance from my husband about painting over oak molding. It took me 15 years to convince my husband that there was more paint colors than white!
