Steve M asked: Hi, my fiance and I are purchasing an old Fixer-Upper and we are wondering if there is anyone here with rehabbing experience that can tell us what problems to look out for before we purchase. We realize old homes can have all sorts of issues (plumbing, electrical, foundation, etc), but we are clueless about what to look for. If you have any clue, we could really use a checklist to bring with us when we go to view the house tomorrow. This home is a 2 story brick, with a basement. Please help us, Thanks,
Steve
I would like to just say I appreciate all the helpful hints, and I really wish I could choose more than one best answer, because there are a couple of you guys out there that really went out of your way to give me everything I needed to know. Turns out we are going to buy the house and start restoring it room by room. Thank you for your contributions,
Steve

squirrely asked: I have some leaky windows that need to be replaced, and also some moldy drywall that needs to go. Would it be easier/cheaper to do one before the other? Will mold remediation people take out the drywall if the old leaky window is still in place?
Thanks

Kymimom asked: Is there a Insurance company that is international?
I own two pieces of Property one is a home in Michigan and one is a inherited family cottage in Canada (Ontario).
I have insurance on the Michigan home ( Primary residence) and carry a mortgage on it.
I currently do NOT have insurance on the recently inherited family cottage in Canada ( seasonal home) and I do NOT have a mortgage on it…it is all paid off.
Last year we fixed/brought the electrical, plumbing and cosmetic issues all up to code or updated, with new flooring, tile in the bathroom etc.
This year we decided to see if we could make the cottage available as a seasonal rental ( weekly, daily during the summer), since the Cottage is in a Beach community.
We need Insurance on the Cottage, yet we cannot seem to find anyone who will provide such Insurance b/c we are US citizen’s not living in Canada!
PLEASE help -
We need seasonal cottage Insurance - that covers the Cottage as a rental property for 3-4 months out of the year!

All Business asked: I recently bought a house built in 1941. I am about to replace the wood siding with vinyl siding. When taking off the wood siding I noticed that the sheathing is made of something that looks a lot like drywall today. Is it safe to put tyvek over that and vinyl the house or should that be removed as well and replaced with OSB? Same material was used as a base for plastering the interior walls as well. Thanks!

g b asked: Hello,
I rebuilt part of my motor which somehow caused an electrical shortage on my vehicle. The lights didn’t work for a while, but one day when I was pulling fuses they just decided to start working. I drove for a month or so and they all of a sudden stopped working again. All the fuses I’ve checked are fine.
Here’s the things that don’t work:
Headlights/Taillights
Dome light/instrument cluster lights
Brake lights
Horn
Cigarette lighter
Power door locks
and there is also an “anti-lock” light on my dash
Things that work:
Blinkers
Radio
Power windows
Windshield wipers
Heater
If anyone can narrow this down for me I would greatly appreciate it. I have decent mechanical and electrical knowledge, just not enought do diagnose the problem myself.
Thanks!!

The Insult Monger asked: We hired a home improvement contractor for a major landscaping job. He completed about 80% of the work but then disappeared. Right before he disappeared, he asked if we minded paying him for the work he already completed. He seemed nice so we agreed. Then, he vanished, even though he signed a contract with us saying that he was supposed to do our driveway (which he didn’t — and now it is near winter and we have no driveway). Can he legally do this? (walk off a job even though the work in the contract is incomplete)

puzzleraspie asked: My husband and I are ready to tackle the basement and finish remodeling it - we already have it framed. Our biggest debate right now is how to finish the ceiling. One part of me wants to drywall it but my husband hates that idea, because maintenance in the future could ****…. I get that. I personally **** the loook of a drop ceiling. Should we paint the basment ceiling white, as it is, and go with a contemporary look? Would that be a good compromise? Can I still achieve a great finished look that way or would it look cheesy?
So you are all saying painting the ceiling as is - it’s a bad idea?
