insulating your home
tab1 asked:

My wife and I bought a lemon of a house a year back. It seems it is incredible hard, and costly, to keep the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

How can you tell if your home has been insulated? If it has not, is foam insulation the best, or only, option?

How to insulate a home built in 1960?

The Hollow Girl asked:

I am buying a house built back in 1960s as a summer home. I want to add more eco friendly insulation without having to rip down the walls. I have heard of companies that blow bits of newspaper into the walls but I have no idea who would even do that where I live (poconos, pa) Are there any other suggestions out there for making my home well insulated. I also forgot to mention there is just a dirt crawl space with newer insulation underneath.

Where to insulate my home so the floors are not so cold?

the77bag asked:

The house I live in is an older one where the garage is underneath of it. The garage has been somewhat converted into being a basement. The furnace and water heater are down there, two small windows and nothing much more. I store a bunch of crap down there. It’s freezing cold, (I live in Iowa) and because the ceiling down there is also the backside of my floor throughout the house, my floors are freezing cold too. What can I do to warm things up that isn’t too expensive. I rent and my landlord is a tight *** and won’t reimburse any money I spend.

home improvements by friend cheated us?

Thursday, December 25th, 2008
patti h asked:

Our “friend”, proclaimed handyman, really got us for home improvements costs. During his work, he asked for $1,500. which (duh) I gave him by check written out “cash” w/comments on the bottom “home improvement.” I paid for all supplies. Long story short, 75% of work is not finished. He tried to put a sprinkler system in our yard, but had no clue. Our screens on back porch are now in place, but he never finished cutting them properly. We live in FL & Hurricane Katrina did a bit of damage. We paid for a pressure cleaner which he used 1st for his own home & charged us for the rental & $15/hr. to shoot a bit around our home. Twice he used a snake to unclog, but Draino works. He presented me w/a bill & I could not read it. All scribbles, but thinking he was a good friend of my husband, I wrote him a $1,500 check. Later we argued about the unfinished work & I fired him. Can I get any money back? Would appreciate any advice or experiences. TY — Patti H
